The oldest and largest predominantly African-American fraternity
Prince Hall Freemasonry is a branch of Freemasonry that was founded by African American men in the late 18th century. The organization is named after its founder, Prince Hall, who was a prominent abolitionist and community leader in Boston.
Prince Hall and 14 other black men were initiated into a predominantly white Masonic lodge in 1775, but were not granted full membership. In response, Hall and his associates founded their own lodge, which eventually evolved into the Prince Hall Freemasonry organization. Over time, Prince Hall Freemasonry spread throughout the United States and beyond, with lodges established in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Liberia.
Prince Hall Freemasons engage in many of the same activities as other Masonic organizations, including community service, charity work, and promoting personal growth and development. The organization also places a strong emphasis on supporting and empowering African American communities.
